6 Air Experience Flight (6 AEF)

There are numerous Air Experience Flights located around the UK mainland, usually co-located with a University Air Squadron. Number 6 AEF is commanded by a Senior Instructional Officer with Squadron Leader rank and is staffed by a mix of serving RAF and RAF Volunteer Reserve officers. The major task of Benson’s AEF is to provide an annual air experience flight of 20 minutes duration to every cadet in its allocated region. Cadets are drawn from Air Training Corps (ATC) and Combined Cadet Forces (CCF) from Herts & Bucks, Thames Valley, Surrey, Sussex, London, Middlesex and Kent ATC Wings, and 43 Schools with CCF RAF contingents.

The Grob Tutor T1 (Training)

The Grob Tutor is a fully aerobatic aircraft used by the AEF and RAF as a training aircraft. It is powered by a Textron Lycoming AE-360-B piston engine and can reach a top speed of 135kts!

612 Volunteer Gliding School

612 VGS provides gliding training for 2477.

Equipped with the Grob 109B "Vigilant" motor glider, instructors at 612 VGS train cadets from introduction to solo standard.

Gliding Induction Courses (GIC)

Cadets attending gliding slots at 612 VGS will progress through the three Glider Induction Courses developing their basic flying skills. The GICs concentrate on the primary controls; rudder, elevators and ailerons, backing up the theory training conducted on the unit.

Keep your eyes on the Noticeboard for details of upcoming GICs.

Gliding Scholarship (GS)

Cadets over the age of 16 who have gained at least their Leading Cadet classification can apply for a Gliding Scholarship. This training course follows on from the GICs and trains cadets to solo standard. Most cadets do solo at this point.

Cadets who have either gained or are expected to gain their leading qualification should, one month before their 16th birthday, ask at the officefor the relevant forms, as a medical to check for fitness to fly solo must also be taken.

Advanced Glider Training (AGT)

After passing GS and soloing a cadet may be slected by the VGS for further training.
